It is often when we are out to enjoy ourselves on vacation that we are more likely to experience events which can affect how much we enjoy the break. The annoying thing is that a few bad situations can spoil a whole week or two week vacation. Situations like this can even escalate and it is not uncommon where people are reluctant to leave their room or even have to spend time in a Police station trying to explain the problem. When visiting a new country, traveling safely is really a matter of common sense because you will not be aware of local traditions or problems that are faced by travelers.

Trust your instincts if something doesn’t feel right, do something about it. It is a common mistake for many travelers to carry all of their valuables with them in the belief they are safer, this could not be further from the truth. Expensive and necessary items like identification tickets for example should be left at the hotel in their safe or the room safe if you have one; it is much easier to recover your vacation if you only lose a few important belongings instead of all of them. One tip that has saved many travelers hassle is placing money in various locations so it makes it harder for thieves and pickpockets to get it all at once.
Unfortunately, the convenience of having two credit cards on the same account in your own country can be a problem in a foreign land so another travel safely tip is to use two completely separate accounts; this provides a back-up should one be lost or stolen. For some time now, thieves have been perfecting the art of snatching handbags and cameras on straps over the shoulder; but by placing the strap over the head and laying it across the chest, this is much harder to do without cutting the strap. Try to be aware of where you are when you stroll around and don’t make an easy target for the snatch thieves on the back of bikes. From a criminal’s point of view, large groups of tourists are just treated as easy targets and because they do this sort of thing all the time, they are extremely good at it.
The truth is we always believe it won’t happen to us because we are too streetwise but it is that arrogance that gets us caught out and these individuals do this every day. Carrying a small backpack can be a good idea as it can be secured with a small padlock which although will not deter the determined thief, will certainly slow down and prevent the majority from trying their luck.
